Year 2

Year 2

Autumn term 2017

Welcome to Year 2! The teachers in Year 2 are Mrs Cutts and Mrs Morgan. We hope you have enjoyed the holidays and are ready for the term ahead.

Here at Hatfield we teach a broad and balanced curriculum. We ensure that children are taught the key knowledge they need to know before they move towards KS2. We aim to move children through topics in all subjects with the goal that they will reach mastery which is the confident application of knowledge to a variety of question types and situations.

Englishpaddington

In English this term we will be using the classic text, a bear called Paddington.

We will use this book to help us to write lots of different text types. We will be starting English this year by investigating unexpected visitors in well-known stories. Reading at home will help this process in school, it is lovely when children come in and share their stories from home.

dead or aliveScience:

In Science we are going to being by looking at living things and their habitats. We will start by identifying items which are living, non living and never lived.

We will be using the working scientifically strand and weaving it into the lessons. We also are lucky enough to have purchased some habitat centres which we will use to create our own habitats. We will be using the school grounds to help us investigate the different animals and living things which call Hatfield home.

History:

In History we are going to learn about Ancient Egypt. We will be finding out about Ancient Egypt and how the Egyptians lived. We will learn about their writing, their way of life and architecture of their buildings. We will be using books and videos to help us find out more about the ancient civilisation.

postcardGeography

In Geography this term we will be looking at beaches and coastlines, with a particular focus on Scarborough. We will be taking the children to Scarborough to examine the rock pools as a habitat linking to science, fossil hunting and observing changes in the coastline and cliffs. The unit is called ‘Will my house fall into the sea?’ We will conduct a case study on the cliffs and the unfortunate tale of the hotel falling into the sea.

STEM:veg

In STEM we will be looking at vegetables.
